The Ministry is also working on a Blue Economy framework to ensure that ocean observations, scientific research and related services contribute to sustainable fisheries, coastal livelihoods and marine conservation while safeguarding ocean health

The government is committed to ensuring that scientific research and technological advancements benefit ordinary people, particularly coastal and marginalised communities vulnerable to climate change, Union Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) T Srinivasa Kumar has said.

Addressing the valedictory function of a three-day international symposium on fisheries and remote sensing at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), he said the government was taking steps to translate scientific research and technological innovations into practical solutions to address the growing challenges posed by climate change.

Highlighting key initiatives of the Ministry, Kumar said the Deep Ocean Mission focuses on exploring the deep sea, developing indigenous technologies and strengthening ocean observation services.

He also highlighted PRITHvi VIgyan (PRITHVI), an integrated Earth system science programme that brings together research on the atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere and solid Earth to strengthen weather, climate, ocean and hazard-related services.

Climate-smart nation

Another major initiative, Mission Mausam, aims to make India a weather-ready and climate-smart nation by strengthening observation networks, weather modelling, high-performance computing and AI-based forecasting, he said.

The mission is expected to improve forecast accuracy and ensure timely early warnings for monsoons, cyclones and extreme weather events.

The Ministry is also working on a Blue Economy framework to ensure that ocean observations, scientific research and related services contribute to sustainable fisheries, coastal livelihoods and marine conservation while safeguarding ocean health, he added.

Calling for coordinated international efforts to address growing threats to marine ecosystems, the symposium adopted the Kochi Declaration, which proposed an integrated multinational ocean observation system and free, open and timely access to ocean data to strengthen climate resilience and promote the sustainable management of marine resources.

The declaration was handed over to the Union Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences for consideration and policy-level action.

It also called for recognising ocean data as a shared global resource, ensuring free, open and timely access, while emphasising the proper preservation and curation of historical ocean datasets.
